Hi,we adopted Whisper from an animal shelter, he is about 8 or 9 months old. He loves cardboard boxes, but will chew the corners. Is chewing common or is this stress or frustration?

card board NEW
by: Karen

A friend of mine told me , that when they make cardboard boxes or just plain cardboard. They use starch between the layers to glue it together. He was at a factory on business & they were explaining the process. I told him about my cat shredding cardboard , he said maybe it is the starch.

I worry so much!!!! NEW
by: angelina diantonio

Twice a guest staying at my house left plastic bags around and both times it almost stangled one of my kittens. It was horrible.Rubber bands and paperclips are very dangerous also.It will cost thousands to get them operated on if swallowed and lodged.Just be careful.

Ask Your Vet or Petsmart NEW
by: angelina diantonio

I would ask your vet or petsmart before giving the dog treats,You have to worry about choking and it could rip their intestines.Cats only use certain teeth to chew and can choke easily.Be very careful!!!

cats love to chew! NEW
by: my2wins

I never knew cats love to chew so much, but since I've gotten my two kittens, they are like puppies.

I now regularly give my kittens doggy chew treats and they love them.

They also chew cardboard boxes and paper if I let them. I substitute with small puppy chew toys and chicken jerky.

The best kind of chew treats so far have been the 100% chicken jerky treats. (Be sure not to buy those made in china if you can as there was a melamine scare last year.)

It takes each kitten a whole day to work their way through a chicken treat. I used to cut them up but now I give them one whole treat and they just mow it down over the course of a day. They chase their treats around the house all day and bat them around like a mouse. I imagine the chewing action is good for their teeth too.

My kittens so adore their "chicken treats" and in fact break into the kitchen cabinets like little burglers to try to get at them!

For those who live in the US, Trader Joe's has them at a good price, so does PetSmart. They're all labeled for dogs but I've been giving it to my babies since they were about 10 weeks and they love.

Boxes NEW
by: Anonymous

I have two siamese and both will chew boxes. They also love tin foil. They rip it to tiny bits. I can't see that it will hurt them. Just keep an eye on them.

Chewing NEW
by: Beatrice

My cat eats the skirting board in the loo, I wonder if yours is vitamin deficient as he has a craving for cardboard, not that cardboard is in any way nutritional.

Also are his teeth and gums ok? if it's not causing any other symptoms, just get rid of the boxes.

Heop this helps,

Beatrice
