Diarrhea in Cats

Diarrhea in Cats

Diarrhea in cats is not an uncommon problem. Often it is caused by something as simple as a change in diet. My calico lost weight when I put all the cats on an “indoor” food formula. It gave her diarrhea. I took her to the vet not knowing why she had diarrhea and I was concerned about her weight loss. The vet mentioned that many indoor formulas give cats diarrhea. A change in diet solved the problem. Diarrhea can also be caused by parasites, bacteria or diseases such a pancreatitis or liver disease. If you kitty has diarrhea for more than a couple of days, or if you see blood, mucus or worms you should take her to the veterinarian.

To avoid diarrhea in cats caused by changes in food, it is very important not to change your cat’s food too quickly or frequently. It is better if you choose the best brand of cat food you can afford and stick with it. If you give your kitty canned food try to stick with the same brand, it is ok to change flavors as long as it’s the same brand. I use to feed my cats Iams dry food and Friskies canned food. When I switched to Hills Science Diet (Optimal Care) they quit eating or wanting the canned food and are very happy with the dry Science Diet. If you decide to change brands, change it gradually by mixing the new brand and old brand half and half adding a little more of the new brand until you have completely changed over. Also, stick with brands that do not contain dyes and other artificial ingredients.

Also take notice to anything your cat might have been chewing or eating on that might be lying around the house. One of my cats has a tendency to chew on plastic grocery bags. Strands from wicker baskets, ribbons, strings and many other things your cat might take a fancy to eat can cause inflammation in the intestinal tract causing diarrhea, bleeding or even infection. If you see a foreign object protruding from your cat’s anus or throat, do not try to pull it out. You can seriously injure or kill your cat. Take her to the vet immediately.

The moment you notice that your kitty has diarrhea, make sure that he stays hydrated. Diarrhea in cats can cause dehydration and can seriously harm your kitty. If your kitty does not want to drink, you can give him water through a medicine dropper. Try giving him canned food which contains a lot of liquid. Cats love milk but do not give your cat milk because it can cause diarrhea. You can also give your kitty foods that are easy on the stomach. Cooked white rice with boiled chicken meat is easy to digest. Unseasoned baby food would also be easy on your kitty’s upset digestive system.

It is important to know that dehydration can kill a kitten in only a few hours. Don’t take any chances if you kitten has diarrhea or vomits repeatedly, see your vet immediately.
