My Siamese growls like a dog

by LIN
(UK)

My two year old Siamese female growls when the door bell goes. She hates it when people come around. She can be happly sleepping on her cat tree and the door bell will go and she growls like a dog and runs under my sons bed. She stays in there for about half an hour then comes out to see who it is. Is is common for Siamese cats to growl?

She is a funny little thing and can be quite grumpy although she is never spitefull. She sighs out load when she is unhappy about something' when people hear her they can't believe it'.
Does anyone esle's cat do this.

Growling kitties NEW
by: Jax the chocolate Siamese

Hahaha, I just googled " my chocolate Siamese cat growls like a dog " and found this thread and just like some of those who commented before we're happy to know that this is a common trait. Our cat Jax is a pretty big boy and turning 4 soon and has been doing this for several months now. Anytime he sees or hears someone approaching our house he gets nervous and funds to hide while growling like a dog and it's actually a pretty deep growl lol now he usually comes out within minutes once he knows we're ok with our guests ( if they are guests entering and staying for any amount of time ) and Is always fine at that point. He used to be very skittish to company though.

It just shows that each cat has its character and is unique. It does not mean that there is anything wrong with your cat. He is just exeptional

GROWLS LIKE A DOG POST NEW
by: Lin

Cats are just great. I wrote the post about my female cat growling when someone knocks at the door. Well she is 3 now ( still does it, so cute) I also have a 2 year old male now. He has also started growling when the door goes 'like his sister but he just cant be bothered to go hide with her'.It just goes to show Siamese Cats are very cleaver and almost dog like.

Thanks for all the replies I love to read all the cat stories.

Mine does that too! NEW
by: Tofi's Mom

Our beloved 6-year-old Lilac Point whom we adopted from the Humane Society 3 years ago growls at the sound of doorbell too. Every single time without fail. Even when it's on TV!!!

She is the sweetest, most affectionate AND quite skittish petite cat (weighs less than 8 lb), so we were totally shocked to hear her grow like a vicious wild animal when it happened for the first time!!!!

We figured it was something to do with her being territorial and not liking "strangers" or "visitors", but we always wondered if she was the only one that did it.

It's good to know some Siamese cats do the same thing.*phew* Thank you for asking the questions and for the responses too. This thread was very reassuring to me and my family.

P.S. My husband wasn't exactly a "cat person" before we adopted the above mentioned Siamese cat. Now he's crazy about her and we all love her to bits. She is a wonderful addition to our family; she brought so much joy and affection into our lives. We can't think of our lives without her now.

My Siamese growls too NEW
by: Anonymous

I have a blue point siamese almost 2 years old. She is always very sweet and affectionate. The other day, she was in my lap, and the mailman opened the porch door to leave the mail. She growled, just like a dog.

Really surprised me - did not know cats could growl.

So surprised to hear other Siamese cats growl! NEW
by: Doris Arnold

My little guy China also growls...Not too long ago my husband and I were still in bed at around 7 a.m. or so and a workman knocked at the back door, rather than ring the doorbell, and China was in bed curled under my arm and he really growled...I was so surprised..and although he went down stairs to check it out, he too, disappeared until all was quiet again...funny little cats...I am so enamoured with him...to me he is so different than other cats that we have loved along life's way.

Growls like a dog NEW
by: Beatrice

Hi there,

I suspect that they are just letting you know their likes and dislikes, they can be subtle too as well as strident.

Me too! NEW

When the pizza delivery boy comes we have two who growl (while they're running in the opposite direction). But never any other time. Apparently, they don't care for pizza.

My mother had a female that used to talk really spooky and the first time she did it scared me half to death. I was watching a program on television about aliens and I heard from the dark kitchen Ooooooooh Nooooooo very slow motion and deep. And then Heeeelllooooooo, Heeellloooo again slow motion and deep. I think the hair on my head stood straight up. I could not imagine what in the world was doing that. My other cat looked at me like "what the hell was that!!!" And his hair was standing straight up on his head too.

Siamese have to be the spookiest cats ever! But funny too.
