Elderly Siamese Cat

by Irena

I have two siamese cats, a male and a female, both of which are 17 years old and were together for 17 years. The male just died last week. Since my female is also 17 years old, and in good health, because of her age I do not want to get another cat but I am worried that after 17 years she is suddenly alone. Is that okay? I was thinking of getting one or two cockatiels to keep her company. Is that a good idea?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

so sorry for your loss

So sorry to hear about your loss. I had a cat for 19 years that died 2 years ago. It is so sad to loss a pet after such a long time. He was not Siamese but he was my baby. I now have two Siamese cats. My husband never wanted any more pets after we lost our cat Boss 'he was heart broken'. We are both so glad now that I talked him into gettting my two Siamese. They really have made us happy and we love them very much. I am sure if you get your cat a pal (a cat or kitten) it will make him happy again. Remember the first few days after you get a new cat is tough and the older cat will spit and growl and be cross. But he will not be lonely and will grow to love his pal.

Elderly Siamese cat
by: Beatrice

Hi there,

I agree, it is not a good idea to mix our fur and feathered friends togehter, one just agitates the other. Better to get her another cat as a companion, ( preferably Siamese as they do relate better to each other) and hopefully she will bond with the new kittie. Pedigree cats can live up to 23 years, so she may have several more years to go.

Hope this helps,

Beatrice from Ireland.

birds don't make great cat toys
by: my2wins

I had a green-cheeked conure, and my two siamese boy/girl kittens didn't find it to be a companion whatsoever. The bird was more like an aggitator, and the noise was unbearable. I ended up finding a home for the bird a few weeks after the kittens arrived, and everyone was happy. I don't recommend having birds with cats. They don't mix well in my experience. The best combination is boy/girl cats, and two is ideal.

I'd either find her a neutered adult male from a siamese rescue, one that lost its owner and needs a home; or get a new pair of male/female siamese kittens from a rescue foundation so she can spend her last few years enjoying the youngsters, and you can start the circle of love all over again.

Sorry for your loss and best of wishes.
