Good advice

by Stephanie

Hi. I have a shy 6 year old female Siamese cat. We recently adopted an 8 month old male DSH tiger cat. Ever since then, she's been running away under the bed or hissing at him when he's close. She only comes our from the bedroom when he's asleep. Me and my husband aren't sure what to do and we would very much appreciate it if we could get some advice from a cat expert.

She just needs more time to get used to the new animal. There is nothing to worry much about. It is an absolutely normal process of adaptation to the new animal. She used to live alone for 6 years and now there is a new get appears suddenly on her territory.

just give them a little time

Give them time. Your shy cat will come around and they will end up good friends. When my very shy female cat was one years old. I bought a male kitten. She was really angry with me and the kitten for a few weeks. Hissing hiding and growling. Now they are best freinds.
As long as they are not fighting with each other I would just let them get on with it. She will come out from under the bed in a few days. Just make sure you give her lots of love and maybe a few treats so she knows she is your number one.
I think cats are always happier in pairs. She will love her new playmate in time.

Cat introductions
by: Jen

It takes time for cats and kittens to get acquainted. If you can put the 8 month old in a separate room or pet cage. Let your female cat get used to his scent first before putting them together.

Cats are very territorial and your female probably feels threatened by her new "brother."

If you can put the female on things the male used so that she can get used to his smell and do the same thing for him. Cats learn about one another through their sense of smell.

Good luck and be patient!
