traveling with cat

(rochester, new york)

We are picking up our new kitten (9 months old) in Locust Dale, Virginia. I have a carpeted cat carrier and 2 small baby snack cups with tops to put water in one and food in the second. We are driving 9 hrs. to Rochester, NY. I know a cat is good for about a 3-4 hr. ride so we will stop around midway and I'll give her the food and water to take if she feels like it. My question is what do I do about her relieving herself? This ia a brand new cat so there is no way I would attemp to take her out of the van. I am wary of taking her out of her carrier at all. Should I simply put some papertowels down and remove them when soiled and then replace them? Sherry Montgomery

I want to thank the ladies who answered my question. We are all home now. Nika did not eat, or drink, or relieve herself. Upon arrivihg home we put her in our bedroom, set up the litter, food, water and wet food. She has done far better than I could have ever asked. She is eating and voiding. She is changing her hiding spots, although we still know where she is. Last night she sat on my vanity seat and watched my husband sleep. She's coming along nicely.

We traveled far also to pick up our babies.

My two were so scared they never moved.I could see thier hearts beating in their chests.I had 2 babies in the car also.My oldest daughter was 2 years old and the youngest was 2 months old ( she slept most of the time). The girls were so excited. We took a carrier with a super soft beach towel. When we went to get them the carrier they had traveled in had cut up newspaper in it.We just transfered all the newspaper into mine.Everything went smooth.DO NOT TAKE THEM OUT OF THE CARRIER in the van. When you get home let them out.Mine hid for a week and came out when all was quite.I just made sure we had fresh water, kitty litter and food at all times. They will fine their kitty litter and food when they need it.Keep us posted with pictures and stories!!

Travelling with cat
by: Beatrice

Hi there,

She will probably be so scared that she won't eat or even go to the lavatory on the way, she will probably hold on to her pee, but if needs be, could you put a small bit of cat litter in a box or bag for her to use?. Do not let her out as she might run away.

Beatrice from Ireland.
